Many tourists wonder where to buy wine in Morocco, considering the country allows drinking alcohol within specified parameters. Alcohol is available at licensed hotels, bars, clubs, and tourist areas. However, you can drink in Morocco, but NOT ANYWHERE, and especially not in public.
Where to Buy Alcohol in Morocco?
What you should know is that alcohol isn’t easily accessible in Morocco. It can’t be sold just anywhere due to strict laws regulating its sale. However, as an exception for tourists, and out of respect for religious differences, Morocco allows alcohol sales to non-Moroccans. You’ll typically find it in tourist spots, but if you’d like to buy it yourself, let me introduce you to two markets frequently visited by tourists for alcohol:
1. Carrefour
I should inform you that the alcohol section at Carrefour isn’t signposted, but Carrefour is well-known for selling alcoholic beverages.
It has a lot of branches all over Morocco, including in Casablanca, Agadir, Berrechid, Fès, Marrakech, Oujda, Salé, Tangier, Témara, and Tétouan. They offer a diverse range of alcoholic beverages at these locations.
2. Champion supermarkets
Champion Supermarkets in Marrakech offers a diverse selection of drinks and alcohol, including beers, wines, and spirits. Located within walking distance of Jemaa El Fna, you don’t have to worry it’s easily accessible.
As you know, alcohol is generally prohibited here in Morocco during Ramadan. However, what may surprise you is that Champion Supermarkets is the only market in Marrakech that sells alcohol during this time. So, don’t worry – you can still find alcohol during Ramadan!
The store is situated in the popular Gueliz neighborhood, with a parking area under the store. You’ll need to present a passport, to enter the alcohol section. I recommend Champion since prices are often better than those at Carrefour and other locations.
Alcohol in Morocco during Ramadan:
Every year during Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, and alcohol is generally forbidden. However, alcohol consumption isn’t prohibited for tourists. You might wonder, “Is everything closed?” The answer is no! Tourists are given priority, and while many restaurants remain open, only a few serve alcohol. If you’re in Marrakech and looking for alcohol, Champion Market is a reliable option—it stays open even during Ramadan.
